Elections will happen, have happened, which thought processes happened without me even realising…

[this text is currently work in progress…]

In 2022 we are reaching a very stressfull time with democratic elections around the world. Most democratic countries adopt a system of representative people as stand-ins for groups of people (Mayor, Deputee, Senator, President, etc.). The idea is that we will then be represented when group decisions are made that impact us on an individual level. There is a lot happening here as an individual, a lot of presumptions and assumptions that need to be unpacked.

Assumptions and presumptions projected

on ourselves

  • Our vote matters, we can make a difference to the final result
  • Our representatives are the best option for us individually or - altruistically - for our city, country, planet.
  • We, as individuals, are able to select a single person that will embody the full complexity of issues that will lay ahead of them for the next term (4 years)
  • Our single representative will have power to impact change. He/She just as me will have a single vote, will have a single vote, albeit with more impact (1:500 instead of 1:200 million)

on representatives

  • Our voted representative will do as he/she promised before elected during their mandate
  • Our voted representative will not change their mind during 4 years in face of new information, events and political pacts and lobbying (!!)
  • We project that we know and trust our candidate is better than the alternatives, that is, we make a 4/5 year projection into the future with a degree of certainty, even though humans are pretty at predicting the future.
